Sew Merry Scrap Block

This is such a fun and easy quilt to make! It is made up of (20) sixteen-patch blocks, and by simply playing with colors and placement, you can change the entire quilt.

I show how to make the blocks in this video. I also have a free pattern for this when you sign up for the Christmas in July newsletter.

Let’s Make This!

For this scrappy quilt, I am making it to be 48” x 60”, which is a nice size lap quilt. To do this, I will need (20) 12.5” sixteen-patch scrappy blocks.

Because I am cutting my scraps into 3.5” squares, I will need the following:

For Each Sixteen-Patch Block:

  • (8) red squares

  • (4) green squares

  • (4) white squares

Note About Background Fabric:

I like to use the same background fabric, but you can use scraps, too. If you are going to make this quilt using the same background fabric, you will need a yard of 42” wide quilting fabric. You will will have some extra.

Step 1: Cutting Squares

After you have collected your scraps, it is time to cut them into 3.5” squares. If you have an AccuQuilt, there is a 3.5” square die you can use to do this.

Step 2: Laying Out Fabrics Square

Layout the block:

Row 1: Red, White, Red, Green

Row 2: White, Red, Green, Red

Row 3: Red, Green, Red, White

Row 4: Green, Red, White, Red

Sew the squares together and press as indicated. This will allow the rows to nest together. Next, sew the rows of the block together.

Step 3: Press Seams Open

For the seams between the rows in this block, press the seams open. This will help with ease of construction.

Step 4: Laying Out Quilt

Lay this quilt out in a design that you like. Since the blocks are super scrappy, you really can’t go wrong, right? You could also make this quilt with different colors, if you’d like. It is completely up to you! Have some fun with this super each 16-patch block. There are so many variations!

Step 5: Sewing It All Together!

Assemble this in your favorite method. For me, I like making rows and then sewing the rows together. I press the first row to the left, the second to the right, third to the left, etc. Because of the way we pressed the seams in Steps 3 & 4, it will all come together beautifully!

Want to Use Precuts?

Like I talked about in the video, I made a patriotic quilt using charm packs. Although this is a great way to make this quilt, it does take a lot of charm packs. For this one, I made (12) blocks using (48) white, (48) red, and (96) blue. I used Wilmington Charm Packs.

For White: (1) White Out Charm Pack

For Red: (1) Ruby Days

For Blue: (2) In The Navy Charm Packs

I supplemented with (1) All American Charm Pack

The block measures 18.5” unfinished and 18” finished. The layout is three blocks across and four blocks down. The quilt top measures 54.5” x 72.5”.

I hope you enjoyed making this quilt!

Happy Quilting,

Kris
